Recently at the CMI (AER Summit 2025) in Melbourne, we had the chance to listen to people working on the front lines of Australia’s forest, agriculture and environmental industries.
What really stood out was not just the efforts these folks put in every day — it was how different their lived reality is from the stories that circulate in the media. Somewhere along the way the voices of real people facing these problems aren’t given the attention they deserve.
The Reality on the Ground
From droughts to heightened fire hazards, farmers and landowners are living these challenges every day. They are the ones walking their paddocks, watching the rainfall gauges, and making the tough calls to protect their land, livestock, and livelihoods.
Yet, too often, the public conversation about these issues is shaped by headlines, not by the people living them.
When the Story Does Not Match the Reality
Media coverage can sometimes oversimplify or distort what’s happening in rural Australia. Instead of speaking directly with those working the land, we see stories that focus on quick soundbites or sweeping generalisations.
That’s why events like CMI are so important — they put the microphone in the hands of the people who are actually there, who understand the nuances, and who are dealing with these conditions in real time.
Why Listening Matters
Listening to farmers and rural communities matters because it provides accurate, real-time insights into environmental conditions and the challenges being faced on the ground. It helps us understand the true impacts of drought, fire risk, and seasonal changes — not just in theory, but in lived experience.
Most importantly, it gives voice to the people who have the deepest knowledge and practical solutions drawn from working the land every day. This isn’t only about agriculture; it’s about ensuring that the decisions being made are shaped and informed by those most directly affected.
Our Role at Rencon Air & Land
We work closely with landowners and managers every day, so we see firsthand the challenges and solutions that rarely make it to the evening news. Whether it’s preparing for fire season with thermal drone mapping or targeting invasive weeds before they spread, we believe in working alongside the people who know their land best.
