Meet Our Newest Drone Pilot: From Coastal Towns to Cutting-Edge Tech

We are proud to be at the forefront of drone technology in land and environmental management—and it takes passionate, forward-thinking people to help us stay there. One of those people is our newest drone pilot from Lorne Victoria, who recently joined the team to operate our state-of-the-art spray drones. After sitting down for a chat to get to know Andrew a bit better, an adventurous spirit, love for tech, and a deep enthusiasm for learning was discovered.

From Lorne to the Skies

Based in Colac, our newest team member grew up in the picturesque coastal town of Lorne, where the Otways were his backyard. An active town with surfing, hiking out in the bush and motorbike riding, his love of the outdoors was matched only by his interest in technology. Andrew and his partner sold their business and took a 9-month trip around Australia, traveling through the middle and up the west coast. Along the way, his passion for drone flying was utilised —using them recreationally to capture stunning images and hone his flying skills.

“When we got back, I got a bit bored,” he laughs. “I saw the job ad for Rencon online and thought, that’s the perfect fit.”

The Tech Enthusiast Turned Drone Pilot

Although he had not flown drones commercially before joining Rencon, his background in technology made the leap a natural one. Previously working with Parks Victoria at the Lorne depot, he gained experience using thermal imaging cameras—skills that now cross over seamlessly into Rencon’s drone operations.

“I’ve always liked technology. When DJI started making drones more mainstream about 3 or 4 years ago, I jumped on board,” he says. “Now to be doing this as a job is a bonus.”

With his background in thermal imaging and a keen interest in aerial spraying, he’s bringing a valuable combination of knowledge, passion and curiosity to Rencon. He’s now adding drone spraying to his toolkit—a specialty that aligns perfectly with Rencon’s commitment to staying ahead of the technology curve.

“From the start I’ve respected Rencon’s philosophy around using the best, newest technology in the forestry sector. Drone spraying is still emerging, so being part of that is really exciting.”

Taking On New Challenges, Every Day

He’s most excited about learning—whether it’s fine-tuning spray rates, understanding environmental impacts, or navigating licensing. “There’s so much to learn. I want to keep growing in this field and adapt with the changes that come with evolving tech.”

Among the new gear he’s working with are Rencon’s two newly acquired DJI T50s—our largest drones yet. “They’re like giant flying cars,” he says. “They’re amazing machines. Right now, we’re using them for spraying, but they’re also capable of spreading dry feed—massive potential there.”

A Big Family Guy, With a Big Future in Drones

Outside of work, he keeps things grounded with his growing family—including a 4-month-old Weimaraner puppy—and regular catch-ups with his six brothers and one sister. “I’m one of eight kids. Catching up with family is a big passion of mine.”

As for what people might be surprised to learn about him? “Maybe just how much I love learning new things through technology. Whether it’s search and rescue, firefighting, or environmental management—drones have endless applications, and I want to be ready to use them all.”

Looking Ahead

When asked where he sees the drone industry heading, he doesn’t hesitate: “Up and fast. Drone spraying is going to evolve rapidly. It’s safer, more efficient, more cost-effective—if you’ve got the right application, drones are the future in many fields.”

Andrew’s advice for anyone thinking about becoming a drone pilot?

“Don’t be scared off by the word ‘pilot.’ It’s totally achievable. Yes, it’s a big responsibility and there’s a lot to learn—but it’s not as daunting as it seems. There’s huge opportunity in this field. Go out and take it.”

Rencon could not agree more. Welcome to the team Andrew !
